Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off International Gifts for Charity

Passing on undesired offerings might be considered a little discourteous – except if it's done in the proper manner.

A Philanthropic Sale

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction around 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. The eclectic collection could include objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gold heels.

The collection, collectively, are valued at around €800,000. The plan is to auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Italian auction firm. A date has not been finalized, although the aim is to hold the auction before Christmas, with all funds raised going to a selection of charitable causes.

Storage Room Holdings

The presents reportedly locked away in a storage room on the upper level of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been stored away over a long period.

A complete inventory has not yet been officially released, but partial details emerged earlier this year when a comprehensive document of items received was presented in parliament. The question focused on whether a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. Legally, a prime minister must declare presents exceeding €300.

A Global Array of Gifts

Notable gifts feature:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including cosmetics, a board, and numerous carpets received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.

Political Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her allies, with winning over global statesmen and making Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.

The forthcoming sale represents a novel approach to handle the diplomatic artifacts that are collected during a political career.
