Chainsaw Man Dominates the U.S. Cinema Earnings in First Weekend
Did Sony repeated their success? In the wake of the success of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed over $600 million globally, the new movie Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has reached beyond the $100 million threshold globally, reaching a global total of over $108 million this weekend. This movie beat out the thriller Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its second weekend in cinemas, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere with Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).
Impressive American and International Earnings
The work of director Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It brought in $18.2M in the U.S. after a powerful $5.2 million Saturday and $4.5 million Sunday performance. Overseas, the animated by MAPPA film earned $14.7 million across 46 Sony markets, bringing its global earnings to $60.4M under Sony (over $43 million abroad, $18.2 million in the U.S.). Official totals are still pending from Sony its complete box office tally.
Benchmarks to Previous Blockbuster Anime Movies
Specialist agency an industry expert had earlier commented, drawing parallels between the film’s projected performance to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the U.S. and Canada in 2022 and debuted with a comparable $18M in the U.S.. This movie's first weekend is in line with that standard, while its $108 million international sum presently stands slightly below that movie's over $166 million overall box office. Even if it doesn't seem possible the Reze Arc movie will achieve the box office of blockbuster the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a major victory for Sony.
Marketing Campaigns Fuel Success
The studio and its partner Crunchyroll have successfully utilized audience interaction to boost their dominance at the anime box office. The movie's promotional efforts launched at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in the month of July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, special events, and Pochita-themed pictures, followed by a notable appearance at NYCC showcasing never-before-seen content, fan raffles, and additional MAPPA panels. There was even an exclusive fan screening for moviegoers and popular figures too after the final day of the gathering.
