Condemnation Explodes as Former President Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Draws Sharp Criticism
Figures from across the partisan aisle and the Hollywood world are coming together to condemn former President Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the tragic passing of renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Post
After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on his platform to describe the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". The message, he asserted Reiner's demise was "due to the hostility he caused others through his massive, relentless, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Arrest
Police have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in connection with the case. Reports indicate his bond was established at a substantial amount.
A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians
The reaction to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
This is a vile and despicable statement,” remarked actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the remarks. Goldberg pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any worse?"
The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."
Criticism from His Own Party
A number of GOP lawmakers also voiced disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also mentioned challenges with addiction and mental health within families.
Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He openly dared others in his political party to defend the statements.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also cautioned about the risks of authoritarian rule if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy collapse around the world."
Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation after the killing of a different political figure.
An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal
Adding a element of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
