Crypto Sector Loses Over $1tn in Six Weeks Amidst Fears of Technology Bubble
Over $1tn has vanished from the valuation of the crypto sector in the past six weeks, fueling worries over a possible technology bubble and fading expectations for a Federal Reserve rate reduction in the coming month.
Significant Drop in Market Value
Per figures from an established data provider, the digital asset market has decreased by a quarter since its peak in the start of last month, monitoring more than 18,500 different coins.
Bitcoin has experienced a 27% decline over the same period, hitting $91,212, its lowest level since last spring.
Worldwide Market Anxiety Over Artificial Intelligence Bubble
Investors around the world are growing anxious as concerns escalate over an artificial intelligence bubble, with including a major tech CEO cautioning that “no company” will be spared if the bubble bursts.
The UK’s top UK stock index was down by 1.2 percent on Tuesday, its fourth straight day with losses. Europe’s Stoxx 600, which monitors the major corporations on the European continent, also fell by 1.2 percent.
This comes after sharper declines in Asia, where Japan’s key Japanese index dropped 3.2%. The Hong Kong Hang Seng declined by 1.7%.
Executive Warnings on AI Funding
The head of a major tech firm remarked in an interview that there was “exuberance” in the ongoing AI surge. He warned that in the event that the AI bubble collapses, “no firm will be spared”, including his own.
The chief executive of a major fintech firm also sounded the alarm in recent days, stating that massive investments being poured into computing infrastructure made him “nervous”.
“I believe they can be extremely prosperous as a business but at the same time I’m quite concerned about the magnitude of these capital allocations in these computing facilities. That’s the particular thing that I am worried about.”
The executive further stated that the increasing worth of AI companies, such as a major semiconductor firm, was also troubling. The business achieved the milestone of being the first to hit a market value of $4tn this year, subsequently joined by other large technology companies.
“That makes me nervous, because of the volume of capital that is currently routinely invested into this area, without greater careful consideration,” he stated.
Gold Prices Likewise Decline
The price of gold, which is typically viewed as a safe haven asset, is also falling. The current price dropped by 0.3 percent to $4,033.29 per ounce on that morning, after earlier hitting its lowest level in the past week.
The fall occurs amidst waning hopes that the Fed will cut interest rates in December. Higher interest rates make gold comparatively undesirable as the precious metal provides no dividend.
Analyst View on Gold Rebound
However, an analyst at a Swiss investment bank said that the gold price was expected to decline more but would quickly rebound.
“I would expect gold valuations to find a floor quickly, as I maintain the view the Federal Reserve reducing rates multiple times over the upcoming periods, and global central banks’ shift toward gold stays firm,” he said.
Survey Highlights Tech Bubble as Significant Risk
An AI bubble is now seen as one of the biggest threats in the stock market, and a survey showed that 45% of participating money managers consider it is the largest potential threat.
