Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced fury after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be arrested and penalized "through capital punishment" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Recording That Sparked the Debate
The video footage, published on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who previously acted in armed forces or security positions.
"Like us, you all took an oath to defend and support this founding document," the officials declared in the 90-second video. "At present, the dangers to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can refuse improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you must refuse improper directives. No one has to carry out directives that break the legal system or our constitution."
Trump's Angry Reply
The recorded statement seemed to trigger a furious response from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he wrote: "This constitutes really serious, and Risky to our United States. Their words cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives Answer
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership released a unified declaration denouncing the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no position in America," they declared. "Congress members who participated in the video all served our country with great patriotism and distinction. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to guarantee the security of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away take down these unhinged digital publications and withdraw his aggressive rhetoric before he causes harm," the declaration continued.
Officials' Strong Answer
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also issued a statement.
"We serve as veterans and security experts who care for this nation and made an oath to safeguard and defend the founding document of the United States," they declared. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we aim to keep it. No intimidation, intimidation, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred obligation."
"The significant point is that the former president views it punishable by execution for us to repeat the legal requirements," they continued. "Our service members should recognize that we have their protection as they carry out their oath to the constitution and obligation to follow only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They added: "The entire nation must unite and denounce the president's demands for our murder and partisan aggression. This is a time for ethical certainty."
Additional Governmental Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's statements and posted on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the capital punishment of public representatives."
He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this immediately and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had engaged in "sedition", labeling the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This constitutes very risky, you have prominent officials of the legislature advising military personnel to ignore directives, I think that is without precedent in American history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly informed journalists that in what he examined of Trump's posts, Trump was "describing the crime of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the wording and establish all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a White House press conference on Thursday afternoon, when asked by a reporter, "Would the president want to execute elected officials?", the administration spokesperson responded: "No."
"It's important to note about what the former president is responding to," the official said. "We see active officials of the American legislature who coordinated to organize a video message to members of the national defense, to active duty service members encouraging them to defy the president's legal commands."
She added: "The purity of our defense system rests on the command structure, and if that chain of command is broken, it can result in fatalities, it can result in disorder, and precisely what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally promoting."
