Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Become a Strategic Method to Whitewash War.
A freshly coined acronym surfaced a couple of months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, as stated by doctors like child health specialists. Typically, it is rare for doctors to treat a child who has been bereaved of their whole family. However, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of child amputees exceeds that of any other region in the world. Nothing normal about many doctors coming back from a sea of ruins with reports of children being deliberately targeted.
An Unimaginable Crisis Despite a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that genocidal acts are continuing. The Israeli government has denied these claims, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is implicated in. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to offer a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, we are told, is what unity resembles.
The contest, notably prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.
Contradictory Principles
Disregard the reality that Israel was alleged to have used questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an attempt to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that aggression from Israeli settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have surged. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Profound Human Cost
The contest marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of someone in Gaza at present. The show may go on, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. An institution that once promoted harmony has now become a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
