Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Remarks
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, responding to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not surprised...," Wilson stated on X. "Didn't realize you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the media."
The quarterback's response pointed to the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the Saints.
During that period, the NFL found that the Saints had incentivized players for making aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the league for one season.
The Cause of the Recent Exchange
The quarterback's reaction came after Payton delivered comments after Denver's historic comeback victory over the New York. The coach remarked that the team had "found a little spark" with Jaxson Dart, who has taken over Wilson as the first-string QB.
Additionally, Payton hinted that he had informed Giants owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened well after our game,'" Payton stated.
Background of the Coach-QB Relationship
- The quarterback joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M contract.
- The Broncos finished 4-11 in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson late into the 2023 season, a decision that ensured the player from suffering an injury.
Had Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37 million salary for 2025 would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was released, ending the ugly split between the quarterback and his coach.
