Space Traveler Discloses Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after facing a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her lab work and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the avalanche of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

A Path to Recovery

Months following reaching space, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She added that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
