Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield find themselves trapped within a psychic prison built from the recollections of Henry Creel. The search for an escape route in episode 6 has them relive a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—a discovery that may just hold the key to defeating him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a cave that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

They watch a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the trauma went deeper than a defensive killing.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a warship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to give to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is known about the doctor's experiments, the case most likely held samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon handling the contents, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—traits he would later pass on to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Another possibility, the box could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The prequel shows that Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he battles the control of a malevolent force, similar to how Will Byers was influenced by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to fortify himself.

His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a decisive edge in the series finale that awaits.
