The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a young woman containing several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing their own fears and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, though other scenes depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can trigger a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have large flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present element, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
