Walsh Shines as Dominant The Kangaroos Sweep England Aside in Opening Ashes Test
England's attacking frailties were laid bare and capitalized on by a ruthless Australia as the visitors secured a worryingly straightforward victory in the first match of the Ashes.
Shaun Wane’s team had spoken effusively about their motivation going into the first Ashes for 22 years, and they were certainly not short on effort at Wembley. Yet, in the crucial moments, it was the reigning title holders who showed more composure in front of a record attendance for an series match in the United Kingdom of more than 60,000.
Outstanding Performance from Walsh
Led by an outstanding display in offense and defense from club star Reece Walsh, Australia were deserving and convincing winners in the first match of the three-match series, meaning the hosts must win at Goodison Park next weekend to sustain their hopes of a first Ashes win since the 1970s.
They will have to be significantly improved with the possession if they are to accomplish that goal. On several instances in the opening period, the hosts found themselves in advantageous situations but they were failed to score for any points. That was in no small part thanks to Walsh, who pulled off two wonderful interceptions.
Key Moments of the Game
The first came as Farnworth seemed destined to put Dom Young in for what would have been the opening try, then Walsh stopped Lewis as the break neared. By then, the Kangaroos had gone ahead as Reece Walsh himself finished a wonderful play.
Nathan Cleary added the extras before kicking a two-pointer on the stroke of half-time to open up a eight-point advantage. It was a significant moment, as was the try for Angus Crichton shortly after the restart which made it 14-0 in favour of the visitors. The hosts now had to score three times and that seemed to halt their momentum.
Should there have been uncertainty about the winners, they were decisively settled with a quarter-hour to go. Cameron Munster’s half-break was supported by Crichton, who broke through Welsby for the Kangaroos' third score.
That made it 20-0 and there was further humiliation in the final minutes as Walsh completed another breathtaking move, exploiting a tired and visibly shot England defensive line for his second try.
Match Result and Looking Ahead
By then, local supporters had begun to leave early and many did not see Daryl Clark’s consolation, which at least avoided the home side being held to nil. Nonetheless, there are plenty of questions for the coach to answer going into what is now a do-or-die match next weekend.
