What We Know Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
At least 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have labeled a terrorist attack.
As of the newest reports, officials have stated the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.
The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, saying they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she stated.
The couple were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain under care, with a number in a critical state. Those hurt include two police officers who attended the scene.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
