Young Australian Charged for Supposedly Placing Sticker Eyes on ‘Blue Blob’ Sculpture
A young person from the Land Down Under has appeared in court after reportedly vandalizing a large blue sculpture of a legendary being by affixing plastic eyes to it.
The 19-year-old, aged 19, participated remotely at Mount Gambier Magistrates Court in the state of South Australia on that day, charged with a single charge of property damage.
Officials commented at the moment of the recent event, the municipal authorities explained that surveillance video showed a person putting fake eyes on the sculpture, which residents have dubbed the “Cast in Blue”.
The accused did not enter a plea and informed the judge she was ill, as reported by media sources, with the judge advising her to find a legal representative before her next court date in the final month of the year.
The following day the alleged incident, the local mayor stated that restoration to the much-loved community sculpture would be expensive as the stickers were impossible to be detached without damaging the art piece.
“This intentional vandalism to a cherished public artwork is inappropriate and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor said in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also frustrating to those people of our society who have welcomed Cast in Blue.”
The mayor added the council would seek the “substantial” restoration expenses from those accountable for the damage.
At the time the artwork was initially suggested, it drew mixed reactions from the area residents due to its price tag and design.
Costing 136,000 Australian dollars (eighty-nine thousand US dollars; £68,000), the artwork represents a mythical megafauna, with the creators inspired by an ancient marsupial ant-eater found in local caves that was “huge, slow-moving, and intriguing”.
